How to Calculate Cement for Construction — Complete Guide - Yojo construction management blog

Accurate cement calculation prevents both shortage and wastage on construction sites. This guide covers the formulas and quick-reference tables for every type of construction work.

The Basic Formula

For any construction work:

  1. Wet volume = Length x Width x Thickness (in metres)
  2. Dry volume = Wet volume x 1.33
  3. Cement share = Dry volume x (1 / sum of ratio parts)
  4. Number of bags = Cement volume / 0.035 m³

For instant results, use the Yojo Cement Calculator.

Cement by Work Type

Brickwork (1:6 mortar)

  • 9-inch external wall: 0.045 bags/sq ft
  • 4.5-inch internal wall: 0.025 bags/sq ft
  • A 1000 sq ft house needs approximately 60–80 bags for brickwork alone

Plastering

  • Internal 12mm (1:6): 0.028 bags/sq ft
  • External 20mm (1:4): 0.055 bags/sq ft
  • Total for a 1000 sq ft house: 70–90 bags

RCC Slab (M20 Concrete)

M20 mix (1:1.5:3) uses 8 bags per cubic metre.

Slab ThicknessBags per 100 Sq Ft

5 inch9
6 inch11

Flooring (1:4 mortar, 25mm bed)

Approximately 30–35 bags per 1000 sq ft.

Total Cement for a 1000 Sq Ft House

WorkBags
Foundation30–40
RCC Structure100–130
Brickwork60–80
Plastering70–90
Flooring25–35
Miscellaneous15–25
Total300–400

At 2026 rates of ₹370–₹420 per bag (OPC 53), total cement cost is ₹1.1–₹1.7 lakh.

Reducing Cement Wastage

  1. Mix only 30 minutes' worth of mortar at a time
  2. Store bags on raised platforms covered with plastic
  3. Use within 90 days of purchase
  4. Enforce correct ratios — extra cement does not mean stronger mortar
  5. Track daily consumption using tools like the Yojo app

Which Cement Grade to Use?

  • OPC 53: Best for RCC work (slabs, columns, beams)
  • PPC: Better workability for brickwork, plastering, and flooring
  • OPC 43: General-purpose masonry
